What does a turbocharger improve about an engine?
A turbocharger does two very important things, it increases power and it actually increases the efficiency too in most cases. This made turbochargers very desirable even for both economy cars and performance cars. As auto manufacturers try to get higher and higher efficiency numbers while still meeting the demand for power, a turbo becomes very attractive. That’s why you find them on nearly everything.
Performance cars had a problem, as they often ditch efficiency to pump out power, but with a turbo, they get the best of both worlds. For economy cars, the problem was just the opposite. They went with small engines to get high efficiency, but they were often underpowered and felt sluggish to consumers who were becoming more used to more power. Throwing a turbo on there improved the power and still kept the engine efficient.
How does a turbo increase power?
A turbo increases power simply by ramming more air, and by extension, more fuel into each cylinder. Because the compression is higher, the resulting explosion yields more energy.
Why does a turbo increase efficiency?
A turbo gets more efficiency because it’s using the same amount of mechanical resources as a small engine but pushing a big engine’s worth of air and fuel through it.
Should you put a turbo on your engine?
You definitely shouldn’t avoid turbos. Turbos are great, and you should be excited to have a car with a turbo whether you want efficiency or power. However, you shouldn’t consider putting a turbo on an engine yourself unless you know what you are doing.

If your engine wasn’t built to handle the added compression that comes with a turbo, then you could damage it, perhaps even beyond repair.
Also, without a properly-tuned engine and turbo setup, you may get neither the performance nor the efficiency advantages.
